The Hypertherm Powermax 65/85/105 Nozzle 45A from SRI precisely targets the stream of plasma for precise cutting performance. When a plasma cutter nozzle and a powered electrode reaches metal, the spark causes the gas to become plasma. The torch cutting nozzle has an orifice designed to limit the arc to a specific diameter without the arc actually touching the nozzle. This superbly engineered nozzle directs the plasma arc to a precise diameter. The plasma gas is used to create a thin boundary layer of cool gas to maintain separation. If the arc contacts the cutting nozzle, it might cause a double arc damaging the nozzle. Also, the nozzle might be gouged or its hole put out of round. Gouges inside the nozzle are often caused by current being too much or airflow too little. Piercing or cutting too fast can also cause nozzle damage. Damaged nozzles should be checked frequently and – if necessary -- replaced immediately. The quality of cutting is greatly reduced when nozzles are worn.
